2011 Goedhart Syrah - Hedges Family Estate
Dark purple, almost black color. Aromas of leather, black berry and buttered toast with hints of clove, cinnamon, black licorice and citrus peel. The entry is full bodied but soft with flavors of dark fruits, mincemeat and toast and hints of leather and citrus. It finishes long with a citrusy acid note and evident but pleasant tannins. This wine finishes like a wine that will peak in 10-15 years . Grapes are from Be’ Villa Vineyard, which is in the Red Mountain AVA. The wine was destemmed and partially crushed into stainless steel fermenters where it was punched down three times per day until desired tannin extraction was achieved. It was then pressed to barrels where it underwent malo-lactic fermentation, then racked off lees and 100% barrel aged for 17 months in 30% new American and French oak. Harvest Notes: As in 2010, 2011 was another excellent but slightly unusual vintage in Washington State. The La Nina current again made for cool spring temperatures, which delayed bud break and slowed early season growth. When combined with a warm but not particularly hot summer, veraison was one to two weeks late, which meant Syrah, a mid-season ripening variety, came off during a cooler time of year than usual, resulting in expressive, concentrated fruit and color, lower alcohol and wonderful acidity.
