2011 Descendants Liegeois Dupont - Hedges Family Estate
Typical Syrah dark purple-black color. Aromas of toast, raw steak and sweet dried sage with some mincemeat, dark fruits, cinnamon bark and hints of leather, cedar and brambles. The palate is full and structured on the entry and tastes of dark fruits with hints of leather and vanilla toast. The wine is nicely acidic and finishes long and chewy. Grapes are from Les Gosses Vineyard, which is in the center Red Mountain AVA. The wine was pumped over on skins for 8 days before pressing to barrel and undergoing malo-lactic fermentation. The wine was 100% barrel aged for an average of 12 months in 52% new oak and 48% older oak consisting of 31% French, 7% Hungarian and 62% American wood. Harvest Notes: As in 2010, 2011 was another excellent but slightly unusual vintage in Washington State. The La Nina current again made for cool spring temperatures, which delayed bud bre ak and slowed early season growth. When combined with a warm but not particularly hot summer, veraison was one to two weeks late, which meant Syrah, a mid-season ripening variety, came off during a cooler time of year than usual, resulting in expressive, concentrated fruit and color, lower alcohol and wonderful acidity.
